Derissa Hattie Coates was born on February 4, 1941, in Baltimore, Maryland at John Hopkins Hospital, to parents Russell P. Clark and Reba C. Taylor. Derissa departed this world on June 28, 2020 after heroically battling a brain tumor and recovery from major brain surgery. Derissa attended Pumphrey Elementary school in Pumphrey, Maryland where she met her future husband, Albert Coates. Derissa attended Dunbar High School in Baltimore and graduated from Rancocas Valley Regional High School in Mount Holly, New Jersey. She also attended Harford Community College where she studied Nursing. She had four sons with Albert. Albert and Derissa married in 1960 in Baltimore before embarking on a long career of relocating as a military officer’s spouse. This journey took her from Baltimore to Kansas, and California among other places as well as Heidelberg Germany in the late 1970’s. Ultimately returning to Maryland after Albert's military retirement in 1980. Derissa worked as a health aide nurse helping and assisting elderly patients with her compassion and love which was her hallmark. Derissa also worked in retail at Marshalls while honing her second passion for bargain shopping and always finding a great deal and showering her friends, children and grandchildren with gifts. Derissa was a fantastic mother to her sons. She took great care and focus on Kevin, made sure Tony had a care package during the first Gulf War even over in the Persian Gulf. She was always available to listen to her youngest son Jeff and made it a point to attend lunch dates with her granddaughter Camille. Derissa enjoyed gardening and walking 10K’s with Albert in Germany. Derissa was kind to anyone she met and always offered her time and ear whenever needed. Derissa was beloved by all who met her and will be missed by all who knew her. Derissa leaves to mourn, her Husband of 60 years, Albert Coates, sons, Kevin, Tony and Jeff, daughter in laws Conte’ and Tara Coates, sister Carolyn Martin-Davenport, Uncle - patriarch of the Taylor family - Mr. John T. Taylor, sister in law Doris Hatcher , brother in laws Clarence Hatcher and Shelly Howard, one precious granddaughter, Camille J. Coates and a host of other family and friends.
Visitation will be held at the locally-owned Loudon Park Funeral Home, Inc., 3620 Wilkens Avenue,Baltimore, MD (21229) on Tuesday, July 7th from 10 AM until 12 Noon. Graveside services will begin at 12 Noon in the Loudon Park Cemetery.
